Chapter Fourteen
By this point, it was after two oâclock, and for once, I didnât feel like slinging barbecue for the rest of the day. Not when Mason was holding Liam hostage and I had less than twenty-four hours to figure out a way to save my friend. So I asked Sophia to cover the restaurant. I also texted Owen, Bria, and Finn, and we all agreed to meet at Fletcherâs house to decide our next move.
Thirty minutes later, Silvio steered his van off the road and into the gravel driveway. He hadnât said a single word during the ride, and I hadnât tried to coax him to talk. Nothing I could say would make this situation any better or his hurt, worry, and heartache any easier to bear. Just like nothing could lessen my own regret, shame, and guilt.
The van crested the ridge, and Fletcherâs house popped into view. Silvio blinked in surprise, as did I. Cars filled the driveway, and people were milling around on the front porchâseveral more people than I had expected.
âWhatâs going on?â Silvio finally spoke. âDid you ask them all to come?â
I shook my head. âNo. I only texted Owen, Bria, and Finn.â
Silvio squeezed his van into an empty spot in the driveway, and the two of us got out and walked over to the porch.
Owen, Bria, and Finn were here, just as I had expected, and Jo-Jo had also shown up, along with Xavier. But there were two new additions to the crowd: a tall man with blue eyes, tan skin, and blond hair slicked back into a low ponytail and a curvy woman with toffee eyes and skin and short black hair.
Phillip Kincaid was Owenâs best friend and the owner of the Delta Queen riverboat casino, while Roslyn Phillips was Xavierâs significant other and the owner of the Northern Aggression nightclub.
Owen, Bria, and Finn must have contacted our other friends, and theyâd all dropped everything to come help us. My heart swelled with love and gratitude, and a little spark of hope ignited inside me. For the first time since Iâd seen Liamâs battered face, I felt like we might actually have a chance to save him.
âPhillip, Roslyn.â I nodded at them.
âWeâre here for you, Gin,â Phillip said.
Roslyn looked at me, then Silvio. âAnd you too, Silvio. Whatever you need.â
I glanced over at the vampire. Tears glimmered in his eyes, although he quickly cleared his throat and blinked them away.
âThank you,â he replied in a strained voice.
Silvio gave everyone a tight smile, then opened the front door and headed inside the house, leaving the rest of us on the porch.
âHeâs taking this really hard,â Bria said, sympathy rippling through her voice.
I sighed. âI know, and itâs all my fault. I should have pulled Liam out of Masonâs orbit the second we found the money.â
âYou didnât know you were going to run into Mason and that he was going to figure out that Liam was really working for you,â Owen said, putting his arm around my shoulder.
